Women's Basketball Just Short in Back-and-Forth with OU Chillicothe

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Great Lakes Christian College women's basketball (0-5, 0-0) just barely missed out on its first win of the season on Saturday, dropping a narrow 62-60 decision to Ohio University Chillicothe (2-2, 1-0) on day two of the Carol Forbes Cancer Classic.

The game was a close one right from the outset. The Hilltoppers rode 53.8% shooting in the first half to a 19-16 lead after the first quarter and led 35-30 at the break. Great Lakes' offense came to life in the third, however, rallying to take a 42-40 lead off a Kerlunda Dervil three-pointer midway through the third. Buoyed by their offense, GLCC scored 23 points in the third and led by as many as five before going into the final frame ahead 53-50.

Both offenses slowed down in the fourth quarter, but OUC put together a 10-0 run that bridged the final two periods and gave them a five-point lead late. Great Lakes rallied to tie it at 58 with a three-pointer, but the Hilltoppers stood tall down the stretch, doing just enough to nose ahead and keep the Great Lakes offense at bay, holding out for a 62-60 win.

  • Dervil and Oghenohoke Johnson led all scorers with 20 points for Great Lakes. Johnson had a double-double with 15 rebounds. Dervil led with eight steals.
  • Azhure Shotwell had 15 rebounds and Mystic Striker picked up a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
  • GLCC out-rebounded OUC 55-34, including 31 offensive rebounds.
  • OUC, however, outshot GLCC 46.2% to 31.1%
