LANSING, Mich. - Great Lakes Christian College women's basketball (0-21, 0-2) nearly pulled off the comeback on Saturday against visiting Finlandia University, but came up short, losing 71-61.
Finlandia got off to a flying start, quickly building a double-digit lead and leading 24-8 after a first quarter in which Great Lakes shot 15.8% (3/19) from the floor. The home offense started to click in the second quarter, stanching the bleeding and going to halftime down 41-22.
Great Lakes played one of its best quarters of the season in the third, outscoring the visitors 22-13 and cutting the deficit down to ten while shooting 7/16 (43.8%) from the field. Finlandia opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run and led 69-47 at one point before GLCC went on a run of their own, scoring 12 unanswered to bring the game back within ten, but by that time there was too little time remaining and Finlandia held on to win 71-61.
- Kerlunda Dervil led Great Lakes with 20 points off the bench.
- Three Great Lakes players nearly had double-doubles: Mystic Striker (15 points, eight rebounds), Oghenehoke Johnson (9,14) and Valerie Kopper (11,9).
- Finlandia's Katie Lundeen led all scorers with 24 points.
- Great Lakes shot only 14/34 (41.2%) from the free throw line.
- Finlandia outrebounded GLCC 62-42, but committed 34 turnovers to Great Lakes' 17.
