Women's Basketball comes up short in road clash with Welch

GALLATIN, Tenn. - Great Lakes Christian College nearly found their first win on the road on Saturday, coming up just short, 74-69 against regional opponent Welch College.

Great Lakes led after the first quarter 21-20, and held the Flames to only 10 second-quarter points en route to a 32-30 halftime advantage.

Things came apart in the third, however, as Welch outscored Great Lakes 23-10 to grab a lead they would not relinquish. They held off GLCC's fourth-quarter comeback attempt to escape with a 74-69 win.

Randi Fitzgerald led Great Lakes with a career-high 26 points. Mystic Striker scored 21 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. Ashleigh Sage led Welch with 28 points and 15 rebounds.

After the game, coach Richard Westerlund said he was "really proud of my ladies."

"We won three of four quarters today," he said. "Just had a bad third quarter. A lot of positives to take away from the game. Our girls battling back from being down 16 to have a chance to win game late truly inspired me. I couldn't be prouder to be their coach. I am excited to see how we continue to change our best."
