Kimball was most recently the assistant women’s coach at Olivet College in the 2022-2023 season. He has also served as the head women's basketball coach at Lake Michigan College. The Red Hawks finished the 2021-22 season with an 18-10 record and earned a spot in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Region 12 State Playoffs. Overall, Kimball has more than 30 years of coaching experience. His other collegiate coaching stops include Central Michigan University, Lansing Community College and Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC). While at GRCC, Kimball was named the MCCAA Western Conference Coach of the Year following the 2015-16 women's basketball season.

Prior to LMC, Kimball was the athletic director at Cocoa Beach High School in Florida. But he is best known in Michigan for his time at Portland High School and built one of the most successful girls' basketball programs in the state. During Kimball's tenure from 2004-14, Portland won nine league, six district and three regional titles, and reached the Michigan High School Athletic Association semifinals in 2008 and 2010. Kimball has been honored as the Associated Press Class B Coach of the Year as well as the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Coach of the Year.

Kimball earned a bachelor's of science degree in physical education and business from Central Michigan. He later returned to CMU to earn a master's degree in counseling.
