Bench Powers Men's Basketball to Road Win

GALLATIN, Tenn- Men's Basketball team was back on the road again to take on another NCCAA Mideast Region opponent in Welch College. Welch College Flames was coming off a big win on the road against #4 Johnson University at Johnson earlier in the week. The Crusaders controlled the game wire to wire in a 85-62 victory to improve to 9-9 overall and 5-0 in NCCAA play. The Crusaders started off slow in the first half but the Crusaders length and athleticism bothered the smaller Flames to take a 39-23 lead at the half.

In the second half the Crusaders changed their lineup some after the Flames cut it to as small as eight before GLCC bench sparked the Crusaders to take control again of the game. Kevin Wright, DonTre Garrett, and Jacob Cole provided a lot of energy off the bench in the second half to spark the Crusaders to build their lead as large as 28. DonTre Garrett scored a season high 13 points in the victory. The trio of Isiah Reed, JaQuin Jones, and Elijah Kess combined for 49 of the Crusaders 85 points in the victory.

Inside the Box Score:

  • GLCC shot a season best 14/33 from three while holding Welch to 7/30 from three.
  • Crusaders outrebounded the Flames 48-40
  • GLCC held the flames to just 36 percent shooting from the floor
  • The bench scored 42 of GLCC 85 points

What Coach Says:

"It is always good to get a nice road win. Welch is really solid team. Coach Fawbush is doing a great job with his guys. They are top 3 scoring team in the country and the best three point shooting team in the country. I am really proud of the way our guys defended and held a very good offensive team." On the bench play, "I thought our bench was really special tonight. We had some guys really step up, particularly DonTre, Kevin, Kess and Jake. They really were the difference tonight." On 5-0 start in NCCAA play, "Obviously it is great, but we know we have more work to do. This was a good step but we know we have to continue to focus on winning one game at a time."
