Men's Soccer Earns First Win, 2-1 Over Fairhaven

LANSING, Mich. - Everything came together for Great Lakes Christian College men's soccer (1-6, 0-2) on Saturday as they came away with a 2-1 win over Fairhaven Baptist College.

After a delayed start, the first half was played timidly, with neither team able to open up many opportunities, and the two sides ended the first 45 minutes as they had started them: 0-0.

It looked like Great Lakes would pull ahead in the 53rd, but Bonny Kibuuka snuck one over the bar from a few yards away to leave the deadlock intact. A few minutes later, however, Zach Johnson capitalized on a whistle in the box, putting a penalty in the bottom corner to put the home team ahead 1-0 in the 60th minute.

Christian Guild added to the lead in the 70th, picking his spot from 25 yards away and burying a looper to the far corner to put Great Lakes up 2-0. Fairhaven pulled one back in the 82nd, but the defense held on for GLCC and they finished off a 2-1 win.

Great Lakes took 21 shots, putting ten on frame. Gavin Ewalt led a stalwart effort by the back line for GLCC and Jordan Harrison made five saves in goal.

"It's huge," said head coach Ian Kurth after the game, "the guys really needed this. They've been working really hard over the past four or five weeks to improve and come together as a team, and, while we've put together some good performances, in a lot of the games we've just been overpowered. So today against a similar opponent it was really good to see the guys come together, especially in the second half."

"Really proud of all the guys today... They really worked hard and it's a well-earned result."
