Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Maranatha

LANSING, Mich. - Great Lakes Christian College men's soccer (0-1) got underway in their home opener on Friday, losing 3-1 to visiting Maranatha Baptist University (1-0).

Great Lakes opened with a bang as freshman Caleb Yonker took a through ball from sophomore Jacob Leazenby and beat the keeper one-on-one to score on his debut at put GLCC up 1-0 in the 14th minute.

Maranatha answered right back, Kyle Cummins winning an aerial battle with GLCC freshman goalkeeper Alexzander Walker to level things in the 16th. Ten minutes later he put the visitors ahead with a cool finish to bottom corner which gave MBU a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

Zeke Steuerwald scored off a loose ball in the box in the 69th to put it away for Maranatha. Great Lakes had a couple of half-chances down the stretch but could not get any closer and MBU took a 3-1 win.

Walker made 11 saves for GLCC in his debut in goal. MBU took 26 shots (14 on target) to GLCC's eight (four). 16 different players entered the game for Great Lakes, including nine debuting freshmen.

Great Lakes will take on Fairhaven Baptist in Chesterfield, Ind. on Wednesday at 6:00 Eastern.
