10-man Men's Soccer hold on for tense 2-2 draw with Boyce

LANSING, Mich. - Great Lakes Christian College men's soccer survived a late red card and a furious 20 minutes of extra time to pick up a point at home against Boyce on Saturday in a 2-2 draw.

Gavin Talley opened the scoring for Great Lakes, taking a long dribble off a perfect throw-in by Thomas Mason to put GLCC ahead 1-0 in the 27th. Less than a minute later, however, Yonelson Alvarez sped through the Great Lakes defense and buried a strike to tie the game.

Early in the second half, Talley again gave GLCC the advantage, this time off a long ball from Dawson Grizzle in the 52nd minute. Great Lakes looked poised to hold on for the win, even scoring an insurance goal that was called back for offsides. However, Boyce scored the equalizer on a ball into the box that bounded off a GLCC defender and into the goal, sending the game to extra time. In the aftermath of the goal, goalkeeper Jaden Talley was sent off after a verbal altercation with an official, leaving GLCC with only 10 players.

Both Boyce and Great Lakes, despite the latter only playing shorthanded, nearly scored a couple of times in the extra 20 minutes, including a chance for the visitors that was, according to the assistant referee, narrowly saved by GLCC's backup goalkeeper Alexzander Walker before crossing the line.

Despite the drama and the contention, the match ended up in a 2-2 draw.

The game was evenly contested throughout, Boyce taking 21 shots to GLCC's 16. 10 of Boyce's shots were on target to Great Lakes' six. Talley made six saves for GLCC before being ejected and Walker saved two shots. William Fry made four saves for Boyce. Boyce's Jonathan Rudd also picked up a booking.

The men's team will be on the road next, facing Maranatha Baptist next Saturday.
