Women's basketball finds first win in two seasons

LANSING, Mich. - Great Lakes Christian College women's basketball finally ended a 40-game winless streak on Saturday with a 62-51 win over Welch College at home.

The teams opened up the scoring slowly, but an 11-2 run propelled GLCC to a 16-10 lead at the end of the first. Welch responded with a 10-2 run to close out the half, taking a 30-28 lead to the break.

After conceding the first two points of the third quarter, Great Lakes launched a four-minute 12-0 run that would give them the lead for good. After holding the Flames to six points in the third quarter, Great Lakes kept the visitors at arm's length, never letting the lead shrink to smaller than six as they held on for the 62-51 win.

Mystic Striker led all scorers with 28 points and Randi Fitzgerald grabbed 17 rebounds and six steals to go with her 10 points. Abby Bragg led Welch with 25 points and Ashleigh Sage picked up 17 rebounds.

Great Lakes committed only eight turnovers with while forcing 26, including 20 steals. The extra possessions were the difference, as GLCC shot 21/76 (27.6%) from the floor to Welch's 19/51 (37.3%).

Before the game, senior Valerie Kopper was honored at mid-court and presented with a jersey to celebrate her Great Lakes career.
