Conine's hat trick leads Women's Soccer to win in home opener

LANSING, Mich. - Great Lakes Christian College women's soccer won a wild one in their home opener on Friday, 5-3 over visiting Calumet College of St. Joseph.

Great Lakes jumped out in front in a hurry with a pair of goals in the first three minutes from Hailey Conine. In the 20th, Morgan Chamberlain scored off the bench to push the lead to 3-0.

Calumet kept fighting, however, scoring a pair of goals in the first half, one from Monica Mata Clemente and the other from Marcia Keilman, to trim the deficit to one by halftime.

Conine started the second half similarly to how she began the first, with a quick-fire goal in the 49th to extend the lead to 4-2. It took Calumet over a half-hour to respond, but Veronica Campos' 81st minute goal made it a one-goal game once again.

Randi Fitzgerald would put the game away for Great Lakes with a breakaway goal in the 89th to make the final score 5-3.

10 of GLCC's 16 shots were on target, while CCSJ put eight of their 11 attempts on frame. Rachel Wienclaw made six saves in goal for GLCC, Malia Fry made two. Ileana Gallegos saved five shots for CCSJ.

Elena Alvarado needed to be helped off the field after a first-half collision, but returned to action. Abbie Numerick also left the game in the first and did not return.

GLCC will return to action on Wednesday, taking on Andrews University at Henderson Field.
